A great role model for young people

At the age of 20 Michelle Agyemang is a very successful women’s footballer. She plays for Arsenal in the Women’s Super League and plays for the England Women’s team. After playing for the under-17 and under-19 England teams she was called up to the senior squad in April 2025 and made her senior debut as an 80th-minute substitute against Belgium on 8 April. After just 41 seconds on the pitch, she scored her first senior international goal. It was a rapid rise to success. In 2021 Michelle had been a ball girl for England’s World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland.

In June 2025, Michelle was called up to the England squad for EEFA Cup 2025. She scored the equalising goal for England in the 81st minute in their quarter-final match against Sweden, which England won through a penalty shootout. She scored another equaliser, in the 96th minute, against Italy in the semi-finals to send the game into extra time. England went on to win 2–1 to progress to the final. Michelle came on as a substitute in the final, helping England to a victory on penalties over Spain to win their second European title. She was named the young player of the tournament, and later that year won the BBC Young Sports Personality 2025. She was also awarded an MBE in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours for her services to association football.

Michelle is a great role model for young people. She is of Ghanaian descent and since she went to Sunday School at the age of 5, she has known that Jesus loves her. As the years have passed her relationship with God has become more real and personal. She is a person who is thankful and humble. She reads the Bible and prays every day and knows the importance of personal discipline and hard work. Jesus Christ is central in her life. She says, “Everything I have is thanks to God’s mercy and grace. No matter what I’m doing, faith is the key, the central thing.”

Michelle is currently studying a degree course at Kings College, London and is recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury which means she cannot play football at the moment. On the Songs of Praise programme she was asked whether she ever questioned why God has allowed this injury to happen to her? She said, “I am praying for God’s help. I’ve learned never to blame God but to ask him what he wants me to learn from this.” For others struggling with various issues today, her message is that “looking to Jesus is the only solution”. One of her favourite hymns is, ‘Because He lives, I can face tomorrow’.
