Be still and know that I am God

Bible sales in the UK have experienced a significant surge, increasing by 134% between 2019 and 2025 to reach their highest levels since 1998, with total sales of £6.3 million. This growth is largely driven by Gen Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) who are seeking meaning, stability, and spirituality in a challenging world. The most popular versions are the English Standard Version (ESV) and the Youth Version of the Good News Bible.

The Bible is God’s Word – what the Bible says God says. The Bible speaks with a unique authority which is why its unchanging message has spoken to successive generations of people in all parts of the world. In the 20th century J B Phillips translated the New Testament into modern English and said that as he worked on the translation, he found the Bible has “the ring of truth”. Where is a good place to start reading the Bible? A good place to start is with the New Testament and the four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Gospel writers tell us about the life and ministry of Jesus and especially his death and resurrection.

It is not only Gen Z who are seeking meaning, stability and spirituality today. People of all ages are finding modern life, for all our prosperity, lacks meaning. It offers no answers to our most important questions: Who am I? and Why am I here? The hypothesis of Evolution doesn’t help us. It tells us that everything, including human life, happened by a series of chance events over millions of years and no-one made it happen. This doesn’t explain the meaning of life or offer a future hope to those of us living in an increasingly unstable world.

You can find the book of Psalms by simply opening the Bible in the middle. The psalmists write about real life and their experiences of God. Psalm 46 speaks with a calm authority to the anxieties many people are experiencing today. It says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. The Lord Almighty is with us. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us.”
